Betel leaf exports from Bangladesh to the European Union (EU) have resumed after a ban of over seven years, following permission from the EU on April 15, 2021. The ban was imposed due to the presence of salmonella bacteria in some consignments. The agriculture minister inaugurated the exports, emphasizing joint efforts between government agencies and the private sector for producing salmonella-free betel leaves. The exports resumed with one tonne of leaves sent to UK buyers to the value of $1,600, as part of a total export value of $1.9 million for the sector in FY’20, a significant decrease from $29 million in FY’14 due to the EU ban.
