A global shortage of chicken eggs is causing a significant increase in prices due to outbreaks of bird flu and adverse weather conditions. The United States has seen over 14 million laying hens die, leading to a temporary production halt by the largest egg producer, Cal-Maine Foods. Japan, the world's second-largest consumer of eggs per capita, has also reported bird flu cases, resulting in a 20% price hike. Mexico has seen a 30% to 45 pesos per kg price surge due to extreme heat. Norway and Indonesia have also experienced egg price increases, with Norway's prices rising by 17.4% in March. The high demand for eggs as a meat substitute due to rising meat prices is also contributing to the price increase.
