Biodiesel consumption in Germany 2% lower than last year, HVO share growing — UFOP

After a long hiatus, Germany’s Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) published data on biofuel consumption as of August 2025. For the first time, data on the volume of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) used was presented, according to the German Association for the Promotion of Oilseed and Grain Crops (UFOP). Biodiesel consumption in August 2025 increased by just over 3% to 202,900 tonnes compared to the previous month, but remains 3% below last year’s level. HVO use was approximately 10,300 tonnes, approximately 12% lower than in July. Since diesel consumption simultaneously declined by 8%, the share of HVO in the blend increased by 0.7% to 7.3%. In the first eight months of 2025, biodiesel blended with diesel fuel consumption amounted to just under 1.6 million tonnes, approximately 2% lower than in the same period last year.
