Brazil has made a purchase of 63,500 tons of red winter durum wheat from the United States, marking the second-largest acquisition of U.S. wheat by Brazil in 2020. This brings the total U.S. cereal purchases by Brazil to 419,800 tons for the year. Brazil is projected to import a record 7.3 million tonnes of wheat due to steady consumption of cereal derivatives during the pandemic. The country has already imported around 3.5 million tons in the first half of the year, primarily from Argentina. The U.S. is in second place as a supplier, with 172 thousand tons, followed by Paraguay and Uruguay. Russia is expected to also export wheat to Brazil this year, taking advantage of the quota for importing wheat from outside Mercosur without a Common External Tariff until November.
