The decision was confirmed on June 7th.
The request to extend the consultation period was made by the FAEP system, which focuses on representing and promoting the agricultural sector at the state level.
The FAEP system is composed of the Paraná State Agricultural Federation (FAEP), the Paraná State National Rural Learning Service Agency (SENAR-PR), and various rural unions, dedicated to defending the interests of agricultural producers in economic, social, and environmental areas, and providing them with legal representation.
The FAEP system's Technical and Economic Department explained that the originally planned two-month public consultation period, scheduled to start on December 10th, 2024, and end on February 10th, 2025, was deemed insufficient.
Paraná State has consistently been at the forefront of tilapia production in Brazil, with its output representing 36% of the national total, and exports reaching $35 million in 2024, accounting for 64% of national exports.
Brazilian producers fear that if the market opens to imported tilapia, cheap foreign products might create unfair competition, potentially not meeting Brazil's strict environmental and production standards.
