The British Food and Drink Association (FDF) has reported a significant decrease in exports of food and beverages to European Union markets in the first quarter of this year, with a 47% drop compared to the same period in the previous year. This decline is attributed to Brexit, with the new trade agreement leading to increased administrative barriers and additional paperwork for UK exporters. The top ten export categories experienced various degrees of decline, with Ireland seeing a two-thirds drop and Germany, Spain, and Italy experiencing over 50% decreases. Despite these challenges, there has been growing demand for British food and drink in East Asian markets, accounting for 55% of exports. Additionally, the majority of UK companies trading with the EU have reported challenges such as increased costs, recruitment difficulties, and a decrease in EU turnover since Brexit.
