REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON -- Global rice prices have plummeted to their lowest levels in eight years. A surge in harvests and the lifting of export bans in India has led to an abundant supply and pressured prices, dealing a blow to farmers in many Asian countries. Indonesia is one of the factors behind this price drop. Sufficient production has made Indonesia not import rice this year and has made the market sluggish. The export price of 5 percent broken white rice from Thailand, which is the global benchmark, has fallen to 372.50 US dollars per ton in recent days. This figure is 26 percent lower compared to the end of last year and is the lowest level since 2017. The FAO Global Rice Price Index also recorded a 13 percent decrease throughout 2025.
