A study by YouGov for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has found that while 71% of British consumers consume tuna, 32% struggle to choose sustainable options due to confusion. Despite this, 68% of consumers express a desire to purchase sustainably caught tuna, but only 42% are satisfied with the current range available. The study also revealed that 25% of tuna products in retail carry the MSC ecolabel, indicating they come from a sustainable, well-managed fishery, an increase from 18% two years ago. Currently, 42% of the global tuna catch is certified as sustainable to the MSC standard, with Waitrose offering the most sustainable tuna products.
