In Karwan Bazar, one of the largest kitchen markets in the capital, broiler chicken prices have experienced a significant surge, increasing by up to Tk40 per kg within a span of four days, now priced between Tk250-260 per kg. Retailers have attributed this sharp increase to the rise in wholesale costs and the adverse effects of extreme heat leading to chicken deaths. This price hike has occurred despite the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) setting the retail price at Tk175.31 per kg, indicating a substantial discrepancy between government-fixed rates and market prices. Consequently, essential meat sources such as chicken and beef, which is also being sold above the government-fixed rate, are becoming increasingly unaffordable for many, particularly impacting low-income families by exacerbating their financial strain.
