The Spanish Citrus Association, Intercitrus, has called for the European Commission to take immediate action following the discovery of 26 pests and diseases in citrus imports from third countries, including South Africa, Brazil, and Zimbabwe, which have not been previously found in Europe. The main issues include black spot, false moth, citrus scab, and citrus bacterial canker. The association also warns about the threat of the new thrips from southern Africa, Scirtothrips aurantii, which is causing significant damage to orange trees. In addition to seeking measures to prevent the entry of new pests, Intercitrus is advocating for the rapid authorization of effective phytosanitary or biological solutions to address the existing pathogens in community citrus cultivation.
