South Africa's Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, announced an increase in excise duties on alcohol by 4.9%, in line with the expected inflation rate. The beer industry, especially the craft sector, which is still recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown and alcohol bans, welcomed this decision. The South African Liquor Brandowners Association (Salba) believed that the increase would enable the alcohol industry to contribute to economic growth. Additionally, the increase is expected to help curb illicit trade by reducing the price gap between legal and illicit alcohol.
