Bulgaria's poultry sector experienced a successful recovery in 2021 and continued growth in 2022, despite avian influenza outbreaks. The sector saw a decrease in the number of broiler farms due to consolidation, but a growth in inventory and production. Poultry consumption decreased due to the decline in the food service industry and lower tourist numbers, but per capita consumption grew. Poultry meat imports and exports increased in value but decreased in volume in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The European Commission reported a 5% increase in Bulgarian poultry meat production as of July 2022, and it is expected that total poultry meat consumption will see marginal growth, followed by a full recovery in 2023.
