A recent report by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, based on data from the National Livestock Census Report 2021, highlights the significant role of chicken farming in Uganda. Busoga leads in the number of households with chickens, while the central region boasts the highest chicken population at 20.7 million, making up 35.7% of the country's total of 57.8 million chickens. This represents a 54.5% increase since 2008. Chicken farming is a common practice across Uganda, with 70% of livestock-keeping households raising chickens, totaling 4.8 million households in 2021, a 49.9% rise from 2008. Livestock production, including chicken farming, contributes about 4% to Uganda's GDP, with expectations of growth in livestock product consumption in the coming decades.
