In 2023, Canada imported tuna from over 43 countries, with the total value being 214 million USD, which was a decrease from the previous year. The nine largest suppliers, accounting for 95% of the total import value, were Thailand, Italy, Vietnam, the USA, Mexico, Indonesia, Ecuador, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. Thailand's tuna products had the highest market share (52%) in Canada, but Canadian importers have been diversifying their sources and importing more tuna from Vietnam, Indonesia, and Ecuador to reduce dependence on Thailand. Vietnam's tuna exports to Canada saw a 57% increase from 2019 to 2023, despite a dip in 2023 due to economic inflation. Canada imports mostly processed and canned tuna, with over 80% of the total import value. The CPTPP Agreement has significantly boosted canned tuna exports from Vietnam to Canada. However, Vietnam's market share in the frozen tuna meat/loin segment (HS code 0304) is only about 46%, with competition from Indonesia and Ecuador. Canadian demand for products in this segment has not increased substantially.
