The Canadian government, in collaboration with the Tŝilhqot’in National Government and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), is planning a new Pacific Salmon hatchery on the Chilcotin River in British Columbia. The hatchery aims to help protect and restore Chinook salmon populations and holds cultural significance for the Tŝilhqot’in Indigenous communities. The project is part of the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative, which includes partnerships with Indigenous Peoples, governments, stakeholders, and communities to safeguard Pacific salmon. The hatchery will be supported by DFO’s Salmonid Enhancement Program, which produces over 300 million juvenile salmon annually. Additionally, DFO is planning two other salmon hatcheries in British Columbia.
