A research project in Laos, funded by the University of Michigan, is studying the role of the country's cassava processing industry in the regional value-added chain. The industry is crucial for socio-economic development, creating jobs, and reducing poverty. The area under cassava cultivation in Laos has grown significantly, from 100,000 hectares in 2020 to 249,279 hectares in 2023, and the export value has also increased from 193 million USD to 333 million USD during the same period. The project aims to use the research findings to determine the next incentive policy for the industry.
