The Indian Central government has made a significant amendment to the export policy for non-Basmati white rice, shifting its export status from "prohibited" to "free," with a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 490 per tonne. This move, effective immediately, aims to strike a balance between international demand and domestic supply by permitting the export of non-Basmati white rice under controlled conditions. The decision is anticipated to bolster the morale of exporters while ensuring price stability within the country, addressing concerns related to both demand and supply. The revised policy is in line with India's previous efforts to manage inflation and maintain food security, which included a rice export ban, before selectively allowing exports to certain countries.
