(Cheonan=Yonhap News) Reporter Yoo Ui-joo = Cheonan City, South Chungcheong Province, announced on the 29th that it has set up a 'Countermeasures Task Force for Human Infection with Avian Influenza (AI)' and has launched a full-scale response following successive outbreaks of avian influenza in Seonghwan and Jiksan towns. Human infection with avian influenza is an acute respiratory infectious disease that occurs through direct contact with infected poultry or contact with objects contaminated with the excrement or secretions of birds, with a fatality rate of 52.3% in the case of highly pathogenic H5N1. To date, no cases of human infection with avian influenza have been reported in the country, but with recent cases of human infection occurring in Southeast Asia and the prolonged duration of the outbreaks, the risk of human infection is increasing. If infected, symptoms may include conjunctivitis or other eye symptoms, as well as fever, muscle pain, and respiratory symptoms such as coughing. In some cases overseas, only mild eye symptoms appear without respiratory symptoms, so it is necessary to report promptly if any related symptoms occur. The city health center is monitoring 1,102 high-risk individuals, including farm workers and those participating in the culling, and so far, no symptomatic cases have been identified. The health center is providing personal protective equipment such as goggles and gloves to the high-risk group, and is administering seasonal influenza vaccinations and conducting education on the prevention of human infection. The health center has urged the public to refrain from visiting migratory bird habitats, avoid unnecessary contact with wild birds and poultry, maintain thorough personal hygiene, avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with their hands, and ensure that chicken, duck, eggs, etc. are thoroughly cooked at temperatures of 75 degrees or higher for at least five minutes. Lee Hyun-ki, Director of the Seobuk District Health Center, said, "Please follow the prevention guidelines for human infection with AI and report immediately if you experience any suspicious symptoms." yej@yna.co.kr
