Chia, an ancient grain celebrated for its health benefits, is becoming increasingly popular in northwest Argentina as a viable crop. The National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) in Salta is conducting research to determine the best agronomic practices to enhance chia yields. Known for its high omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and antioxidants, chia is considered a superfood with numerous health benefits, including cardiovascular, blood sugar regulation, and digestive advantages. Despite its potential, chia cultivation in Argentina is currently limited to about 40,000 hectares due to climatic challenges and market fluctuations. INTA's findings on optimal planting times and practices present a promising economic opportunity for local farmers.
