Experts in Lithuania predict that the cost of a food basket will reach a record high due to increasing prices of essential food items. The cost of the cheapest food basket is currently being maintained by retail chains, but it is expected to rise. The most expensive items include black bread, tomatoes, sunflower oil, thighs of broiler chickens, and herring fillets. In contrast, minced pork, hot smoked loin, kefir, bananas, butter, potatoes, and eggs are the least expensive. Both pork and chicken prices have significantly increased by 3.8% and 15.3% respectively compared to last year. The government has promised to address the issue, but so far, no concrete actions have been taken. Some Lithuanians are responding to the high food prices by purchasing food and alcohol in neighboring countries where prices are lower.
