A study led by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has found that chickpea yields in Ethiopia could potentially be doubled by enhancing technical efficiency and technology use. The research, conducted in three of Ethiopia's main chickpea-growing regions, found that variations in yields are due to different technology usage among farmers. The study suggests that addressing gaps in land allocation, inappropriate use of fertilizer, and over-reliance on pesticides could increase chickpea output by 53%. The researchers recommend participatory extension programs and strengthening the capacity of women producers to boost chickpea productivity and production in Ethiopia.
