Peru has registered historical documents related to the production and trade of pisco, a traditional Peruvian spirit, in the UNESCO Memory of the World program. However, Chile, which also lays claim to the designation of origin for pisco, has stated that this registration does not grant Peru any exclusive rights over the term and does not impact the ongoing commercial disputes between the two countries. The Chilean Minister of Agriculture has pledged to continue defending Chile's pisco industry in international forums. UNESCO has stressed that the registration is meant to highlight the cultural value of the documents and does not have any legal implications on denominations of origin.
