In the first half of 2020, the European Union (EU) imported a record 110,370 tons of steamed tuna meat or tenderloin, primarily from China, which accounted for 63% of the total imports. This surge, largely due to China's exemption from the autonomous tariff rate quota (ATQ), has resulted in other suppliers like Vietnam and Papua New Guinea experiencing market share decline. Vietnam's export volume dropped by 1,600 tons despite a strategic price reduction, while Thailand's recovery saw a 31% decrease in value. The price of imported steamed tuna meat has been influenced by the market's purchase and sale agreements, especially those made when tuna prices were low. This situation is influenced by the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the EU, which promises to reduce the 14.5% tax rate on Vietnamese tuna meat over seven years.
