Due to a severe food shortage since 2020, China is now promoting the consumption of rice bran as a staple food. Rice bran is a byproduct of the rice milling process and is rich in unsaturated fats, vitamin E, and other essential nutrients. The National Health Commission has encouraged the development of the rice bran industry to improve nutrition and health, and as a means to reduce food loss. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs had already included byproducts like rice husks and wheat bran in the National Rural Industry Development Plan (2020-2025) to fully utilize. The food shortage in China is attributed to global warming, loss of agriculturally productive land, and disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
