Australia has won a significant trade victory after China lifted import restrictions on Australian rock lobsters, worth about $800 million annually, marking the end of four years of coercive trade restrictions that affected various agricultural exports. The restrictions were imposed in retaliation to Australia's call for an independent inquiry into the source of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite this achievement, tensions between Australia and China persist, with issues such as China's aggression in the South China Sea still unresolved. Australia's Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, emphasized the importance of dialogue in advancing national interests and regional peace, while acknowledging the strategic competition in the area. The resumption of lobster exports to China is the first step towards the restoration of other exports, including coal, cotton, copper ores, timber logs, oaten hay, barley, and wine.
