The president of the Brazilian Cotton Institute (IBA), Alexandre Schenckel, stated that the performance of Brazilian cotton exports this year will depend on China's demand for the national fiber. "China had a bumper cotton crop. And this lower appetite affected the shipments of Brazilian cotton," said Schenckel, on the sidelines of Rio+Agro, which ended last Friday (3). In the 2024/25 crop, Brazil produced 4.1 million tons of cotton. In total, only 500 thousand tons are expected to be exported to the Chinese market, compared to 1.318 million tons sold in the previous season. Schenkel believes that other destinations, such as Vietnam, India, and Egypt, may help consume part of the fiber that will not be exported to China. "We need to export at least 90% of what is produced in the 2024/25 crop to avoid stockpiling and pressuring prices for the new crop," he pondered.
