China's Atlantic salmon imports reach record levels in 2023

A total of 39,435 tonnes of fresh and chilled salmon were imported from Norway, maintaining its position as the leading supplier for several years in a row. In 2023, the market share of fresh and chilled Atlantic salmon of Norwegian origin reached 49 percent, up 1 percent from 2022. For the first time, the Chinese market has surpassed the Japanese and Korean markets to become Norway's number one salmon export destination. In the three main markets of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the wholesale price for Norwegian salmon was 130–150 RMB/kg (about US$18–21/kg) in December 2023. The retail price of salmon sashimi in the Shanghai market varies - it was around RMB 300/kg (about US$42/kg). Salmon of Chilean origin ranked second in terms of market share, with China importing 17,282 tonnes in 2023.
