In 2021, China imported 2.8 million tons of pork, valued at $8 billion, maintaining similar volume but increasing value by 3% compared to the previous year. Despite a decrease in trends for other meat imports in the second half of the year, US pork imports fell by 36%, while imports from Spain and Brazil surged. China's pork imports are projected to decrease by 5% in 2022 due to increased domestic production, with the Chinese government planning to support major pig breeding companies to expand. By 2022, China could reach 100% of its capacity to be self-sufficient in pork, potentially significantly impacting pork exports from Brazil, Spain, the US, and Canada.
