China, the world's leading garlic exporter, has had a bumper crop this year but has struggled to export due to Covid-19 closures. Despite favorable weather conditions, the current storage season is expected to see a significant increase in garlic volumes until April 2023. The main importers of Chinese garlic are Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia, with Hungary also notably importing large quantities. Garlic exports have seen consistent growth until 2020, peaking at 2.25 million tons, but have not reached those levels since the pandemic's onset.
