A recent committee meeting in Manta, Ecuador, highlighted concerns about Chinese fishing vessels refusing inspections and allegations of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities in the South Pacific. Alfonso Miranda Eizaguirre, President of CALAMASUR, stressed the need for compliance with management measures and the importance of flag states preventing such activities. However, China's representatives rejected the proposal to address these concerns, maintaining that they are not non-compliant. This situation follows past incidents of illegal fishing and human rights violations by Chinese vessels, including an incident in 2017 where a Chinese vessel was intercepted in the Galapagos Islands Marine Reserve. The investigation also uncovered the involvement of a Uruguayan maritime agency, Verny, in assisting these vessels, raising concerns about the scale of illegal fishing in the region.
