Italy has achieved self-sufficiency in food balance for the first time, as national food exports have surpassed imports in value, a record high of 24.81 billion euros, due to a change in consumption and trade caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The country has seen a 12% increase in exports, primarily of products like wine, fruit, and vegetables, while imports remained steady at 22.95 billion euros. This shift was driven by both a surge in demand for Italian products domestically and a growing interest in 'Made in Italy' products abroad. However, Italy faces challenges in increasing production to cover deficits in key crops like wheat and corn, essential for pasta and animal nutrition. The European Union is also encouraging self-sufficiency in essential sectors to address concerns about global food supply and price volatility, which impact both farmers and the processing industry.
