The World Citrus Organization (WCO) presented a preliminary forecast for the upcoming citrus season in the southern hemisphere during its Annual General Assembly on April 18, revealing a slight decrease in overall citrus production by 0.77% to 24,338,123 tons. Despite this, exports are expected to rise by 7.45% to 4,156,879 tons. The forecast showed varied production changes among citrus fruits, including a decrease in orange production, increases in mandarins, clementines, and lemons, a decrease in grapefruit, and a significant rise in lime production. The season faces challenges like drought, but recent weather improvements offer some mitigation. Additionally, the WCO announced a leadership change with Sergio del Castillo and Badr Bennis becoming the new co-presidents for the southern and northern hemispheres, respectively, while also highlighting the organization's achievements in membership expansion, data exchange, and global citrus sector promotion.
