Over the past decade, citrus fruit exports from South Africa, Peru, Chile, and Argentina have seen a significant increase of 27%, reaching 3.3 million tons in 2019. This growth is primarily due to a rise in tangerine production and a surging demand in the European market. The European Union has emerged as the leading consumer, accounting for 34% of these exports, followed by Asia and North America. The export structure has noticed a notable shift towards mandarins and tangerines, with Europe importing over 200 thousand tons annually. Chile and Peru are the primary suppliers to North America, while South Africa leads the supply to Europe. This trend indicates a steady annual growth of 10% for the tangerine segment over the last five years.
