Socialist MEP Clara Aguilera has requested urgent action from the European Commission to address phytosanitary risks posed by South African citrus fruits entering the European market. Aguilera highlighted incidents last July where the EU intercepted South African citrus fruits containing a quarantine pest, showing the ongoing risk to European citrus farming. She called for stricter measures on citrus imports from South Africa and urged the Commission to extend cold treatment requirements to other citrus fruit species from South Africa, such as mandarins and grapefruits.
