In 2023, the global increase in cocoa prices, driven by climate change and drought, has significantly impacted Turkish food exporters, especially those in the chocolate and cocoa sector. Despite cocoa prices surpassing 10 thousand dollars per ton, Turkey's exports in chocolate and cocoa products saw a 14.3 percent increase in the first two months, reaching 149.2 million dollars. This sector represents 7 percent of Turkey's total exports in grains, pulses, oilseeds, and related products, which amounted to 12.4 billion dollars. The spike in cocoa prices, particularly noticeable before Eid al-Fitr, has pressured sales profitability, prompting producers to seek alternative cocoa sources. Southeastern Anatolia is highlighted as a key region for boosting Turkey's presence in the global chocolate and cocoa market through innovation and strong branding.
