Cocoa-producing countries have sought an extension of the deadline for complying with the European Union's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), set to take effect from December 2024, citing unrealistic deadlines and a lack of necessary support. The regulation aims to prevent the import of beans sourced from deforested lands since 2021. However, the International Cocoa Organisation and other producers warn that immediate implementation could harm small producers and have called for a delay and increased support. The EUDR also faces opposition from within the bloc and from major suppliers like Brazil, but the Commission remains committed to its timeline for implementation.
