The CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, is encouraging increased local consumption of chocolate and other cocoa products to boost production levels and value addition in Ghana. The current national average consumption of 0.6% annually is too low and discouraging, he says. Aidoo believes that by increasing local demand, it will encourage farmers to increase cocoa crop productivity, attract more investment for value addition, and reduce the export of raw cocoa beans. The government is also aiming to attract $3 billion in cocoa investment in 2021 and is poised to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to drive investments.
