Coconut production in the public irrigation projects of the São Francisco and Parnaíba Valleys Development Company (Codevasf) in Brazil has achieved a high productivity, with an average of 40 tons per hectare. In 2020, the gross production value reached R$72.3 million, with 152 thousand tons of coconut produced. The main contributor was the public irrigation project Nilo Coelho in Petrolina, generating R$ 51.5 million. The pandemic led farmers to explore other alternatives, such as dry coconut production for various products. Cultivation is predominantly in the Northeast, with 95% of the 600,000 hectares dedicated to the culture being in this region. The head of Codevasf's 3rd Regional Irrigation Management in Petrolina, José Costa, highlights that this cultivation is sustainable due to agribusiness support.
