On International Banana Day, April 18, the Association of banana producers and marketers in Magdalena, Cesar, and La Guajira (ASBAMA) in Colombia highlighted the need for fair pricing for banana producers in international markets. They pointed out the issue of European supermarkets, especially Germany's Kaufland, selling bananas at prices below what is considered fair, which undermines sustainable and responsible production efforts. This situation poses a threat to the agricultural sector's continuity in Latin America. ASBAMA also recognized the contributions of over 20,000 formal workers in the region, who account for more than 50% of Colombian banana exports, emphasizing the importance of fair trade practices to support the livelihoods of these workers and the overall industry.
