The Director-General of Thailand's Department of International Trade Negotiations, Mrs. Oramon Subthawetham, has identified Phuket-based abalone producer, Phuket Abalone Farm Co., Ltd., as a key player in boosting Thailand's agricultural export competitiveness. The company's abalone products, particularly those innovated into health supplements and cosmetics, could tap into the premium market and the benefits of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with countries like China, Australia, and New Zealand. These FTAs could help reduce tariffs on Thai fishery products, including abalone, and provide greater export opportunities. In 2020, Thailand ranked as the 13th largest exporter of fisheries goods, with a value of US $1,567.13 million.
To further support local entrepreneurs in Phuket, hit by the economic downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department has provided product development guidance to a local tie-dye fabric manufacturer, Pornchanok. This initiative aims to enhance the quality and market value of local tie-dye products by incorporating natural materials and unique designs, with the goal of both domestic and international sales under the 'Garment Lay' or 'Fabric from the Sea' brand. This project is part of the department's efforts to diversify income sources for communities dependent on tourism.
