A comprehensive study conducted by Areté srl and CCPB on the productivity of organic farming in 11 countries, covering 18 products from 2006 to 2019, reveals a varied performance of organic farming compared to conventional farming. The research, which used diverse sources of data, including interviews with local experts, aimed to address the lack of reliable yield data for organic farming, especially in regions outside of the EU. The study found significant differences in yield variability across regions, farms, and crop selection, with some organic yields surpassing conventional ones. These findings are crucial for understanding the dynamics of organic farming and its potential to enhance agricultural productivity.

Why a yield study? Data on yields and productions for organic farming, especially outside the EU, are very few, fragmented and often unreliable. And the simple comparison with conventional yields, with the same crop and country, does not do justice to the many and diversified factors that affect the variability of the yields themselves. The study - 18 products and 11 countries covered between Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, the Philippines and a large part of North Africa, for a total of 40 product-country combinations - highlights the very high variability of yields, with multipliers often of 3-4 times between minimum and maximum values, and even higher peaks especially in medium-large countries or with very diversified cultivation systems. Using data that goes far beyond the statistics available from international sources, the study took into consideration national sources, studies or research conducted on single products or single areas by local research institutes, and ...
