The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has reported a 28% increase in consumer complaints in the financial year ended June 2020, relating to issues with products such as wheat and maize flour, bread, juices, and edible oil. The surge in complaints is attributed to heightened consumer awareness of their rights, as per the Consumer Protection Act. The CAK has responded by enhancing surveillance and imposing fines on companies, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of complaints across the financial, insurance, transportation and storage, accommodation and food services sectors saw significant increases, with the manufacturing sector experiencing an eight percent rise in complaints compared to the previous year. The CAK also highlighted concerns over the misuse of buyer power in the insurance and retail sectors.
