Peru's egg industry is one of the largest in Latin America, with an annual production of 5.5 million tons and a per capita consumption of 242 eggs. Congresswoman Sigrid Bazán has introduced Bill No. 6448 to mandate clear labeling of egg origins and production methods, in response to consumer demand for transparency. The bill aims to shift the industry towards more humane and sustainable practices, such as free-range rearing, which currently accounts for only 2% of egg production. The bill also seeks to increase public awareness about the conditions of egg-laying hens, most of which are kept in battery cages, leading to low egg quality. While the cost of cage-free eggs is higher, there is growing demand for these products among consumers willing to pay for better animal welfare and food transparency.
