Peru: Law is being proposed to promote consumer rights in egg labelling

The egg industry in Peru is one of the largest and most competitive in Latin America, with an approximate production of 5.5 million tons of eggs per year and an average per capita consumption of 242 eggs per year, nationwide. In this context, Congresswoman Sigrid Bazán presented Bill No. 6448, which seeks to guarantee transparency in egg labeling. This proposal aims to follow the same logic as the octagon law, so that consumers are informed about where this product comes from and how it is produced. In fact, 65% of Peruvians want to know the origin of their food, and 76% say they want to know about the treatment of animals in the food industry, according to an Ipsos survey. In the egg industry in Peru, 98% of laying hens are raised in battery cages in conditions that prioritize the highest production amount.
