Indonesia's Minister of Agriculture is pushing for a boost in the productivity of nutmeg, a key export commodity, by promoting the cultivation of superior varieties and grafting technology. Currently, the country achieves only 0.5 tons per hectare, but potential yields are up to 3.7 tons per hectare. The Research Institute for Spices and Medicinal Plants (Balittro) has introduced nine superior nutmeg varieties, but these are not widely used due to limited sex identification technology and inefficient cultivation methods. Balittro is advocating for the use of vegetative propagation and grafting to improve productivity and efficiency. The grafting process was demonstrated during an online technical guidance, showing promise with a success rate above 80%.
