The National Convention of Peruvian Agro (Conveagro) has raised concerns over the significant increase in the price of vegetables and fruits in Lima's markets, attributing the rise to a shortage of supply rather than the ongoing political crisis. The shortage is a result of farmers facing difficulties in selling their produce and shifting to other crops, leading to a reduced supply. Additionally, an ongoing agrarian strike in the country's northern region has exacerbated the problem by obstructing the transportation of products to the capital. In the Great Wholesale Market of Lima, the price of Chinese onions has surged from S/ 1.50 to S/ 12 per bundle, celery from S/ 5 to S/ 30, and broccoli from S/ 2 to S/ 3. Experts believe that in addition to the political climate, demand and supply imbalances, the prices of essential food items like potatoes, corn, and rice will experience further hikes in April due to reduced planting campaigns and existing plant diseases in potato crops.
