[Korea Farmers' News] The grievances and difficulties of fruit farmers cultivating the New Zealand variety 'Envy' apples are deepening. The purchase price of Envy apples produced through contract farming is only half the level of Fuji apples, and damages are accumulating within a 'dependent structure' where they lack bargaining power for shipments. Fruit farmers cultivating Envy in places like Boeun, North Chungcheong, and Yesan, South Chungcheong, are collectively voicing their appeals. The Envy apple is a variety introduced from New Zealand, and 'H&B Asia', which holds the domestic intellectual property rights (IP), exercises a monopolistic position. The so-called 'club variety' Envy is entirely managed by this company, from the supply of apple seedlings to shipment, distribution, and marketing.
