The USDA notes a decline in U.S. fluid milk consumption, yet demand for dairy products like cheese and butter remains strong, leading the dairy industry to prioritize milk fat and protein production. A Pennsylvania State University study, published in the Journal of Dairy Science, reveals that incorporating 15% whole cottonseed into dairy cow diets boosts milk fat concentration and production by 0.2% and 5% respectively, without affecting feed intake or milk protein. Cottonseed, high in unsaturated fatty acids and proteins, is efficiently digested with safe gossypol levels and minimal undigested seeds, and does not significantly alter methane emissions. This positions whole cottonseed as a viable option to satisfy market demands for milk solids.
