The North-West European Producers Group (NEPG) has published a report revealing a 6.9% increase in potato production in 2024, reaching a total of 24.6 Mt, despite a decrease in yields per hectare due to adverse weather conditions like high temperatures and drought. The total cultivated area grew by 6.9%, with France and Germany being the main contributors. The increase in cultivated area and limited supply led to a significant rise in prices, putting pressure on the processing industry. Farmers face challenges such as disease pressure, seed availability, and difficulty in leasing land. The NEPG is urging producers to develop strategies to overcome these challenges and is calling on European governments to implement policies that support the sustainability and competitiveness of the sector.
