In Zambia's Nsama District, a collaborative effort led by CABI, in partnership with the Zambian Ministry of Agriculture, ITABWA Investments, and other local agricultural institutions, has significantly advanced the fight against Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD). By distributing clean cassava cuttings and providing training, 70% of the 500 smallholder farmers involved have reported excellent crop performance. This initiative, part of the PlantwisePlus programme, not only aims to curb the spread of CBSD but also to commercialize cassava farming, thereby enhancing the livelihoods of farmers. The project has facilitated the official certification of disease-free cassava crops and encouraged the formation of new cooperatives, positioning smallholder farmers to meet the growing industrial demand for cassava while ensuring the sustainability of their farming practices.
