CSIR-SARI introduces new cowpea varieties to farmers in Sanzee, Ghana

By Samuel SAM The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (CSIR-SARI) has unveiled two high-yielding cowpea varieties—Awudu Benga and Kanton Bongdaa—to smallholder farmers in the Mion District of Northern Ghana. This initiative aims to enhance cowpea production, food security and revenue generation for farmers. The varieties, capable of yielding an average of 1.4 tonnes per hectare, are rich in essential nutrients such as iron, calcium and zinc, and contribute to soil health. These qualities are expected to transform the livelihoods of farmers, create employment opportunities for youth and promote sustainable agriculture.
